Social Housing in Macao

For a group of almost two hundred families from lesser advantaged backgrounds, resident in Macao, 1996 began in the best possible way: taking up residence in homes of a standard otherwise unattainable. ”A worthwhile sensation of a duty completed” was how Carlos Monjardino described the inauguration of the first phase of the Dr. Carlos d’Assumpção Social Housing project. The first 188 families, out of a planned total of 500, were able to move in following construction of a neighbourhood that had been a priority foundation project practically since it was set up. “When we are attempting to achieve such an important objective as the building of a family home,” Carlos Monjardino added, “we feel directly compensated for all the effort and work both completed and still lying ahead.” In fact, just two and a half years later, the remaining 312 apartments were handed over.
