In Homage to Charles Boxer

One year on from the death of the man considered the greatest international historian on the Portuguese expansion, the Fundação Oriente published Charles R. Boxer – An Uncommon Life. Over almost 650 pages, Prof. Dauril Alden opened up the unusual personality of this historian, soldier, collector and traveller who completed from the 1930s through to the 1980s an amazing body of writing: 355 books and articles and built up a library of rare works (printed and manuscripts) and hundreds of letters resulting from correspondence with researchers worldwide. Committed to promoting the extent of Boxer’s work, in 1989 the Fundação Oriente embarked on publishing his writings in Portuguese. To the five volumes published through to 1993, a further three volumes were added in 2001 out of a total of fifteen works entitled Opera Minora and that collate the disparate writings of this historian.
