Popular Religion Reveals Chinese Culture
Opening up Chinese culture as a means of enriching Portuguese culture was one of the objectives underlying the staging in Lisbon of the Popular Chinese Religion exhibition. The choice of theme derived from the impossibility of understanding art while ignoring the religious thinking that inspired it. Selected from pieces belonging to the Kwok On Collection, the exhibition – the first ever time pieces from this collection went on show in Portugal – sought to present certain particularities of this religion through its visual features. Were it necessary to further justify this exhibition, it may also be stated that it dealt not only with presenting extraordinary international beliefs but also how the major religions form part of how human religious thinking has progressed over time.
