History of the Portuguese in the Far East

The 15th anniversary of the Fundação Oriente was commemorated by the conclusion of an ambitious project that first began to take shape in 1992 and was first publicly presented at Expo’98. This was the five volume History of the Portuguese in the Far East, completed over eleven years by a group of 26 historians coordinated by Prof. A. H. Oliveira Marques. The beginning was chronologically established as 1509 – the date of the Portuguese arrival in Malacca – and ending in 1955. An index volume serves as an essential tool for any researcher or specialist in this field and ensuring that it is far easier to consult the total of almost 5,000 pages of history.
