Ceremony of attribution of the Medal of Cultural Merit to Professor Paulo Varela Gomes

On the January 12, Fundação Oriente Delegation in India hosted the Ceremony of Attribution of the Medal of Cultural Merit to Professor Paulo Varela Gomes, Director of Fundação Oriente in India between 1996-1998 and 2007-2009. The posthumous honour was attributed by the H.E. the Minister of Culture of Portugal and handed by the H.E. the Prime-Minister of Portugal during his State Visit to India.

The ceremony included interventions by Mr. João Amorim, Member of the Board of Directors of Fundação Oriente; Mr. Luís Filipe de Castro Mendes, Minister of Culture of Portugal; Mr. António Costa, Prime-Minister of Portugal an Mrs. Patrícia Vieira.



H.E. the Prime-Minister of Portugal closed the ceremony with profound praise for the intellectual capacity of Professor Paulo Varela Gomes and the work of the various Portuguese cultural agents in Goa, in particular Fundação Oriente for its efforts towards the promotion of Portuguese Language and safeguarding of cultural Indo-Portuguese heritage.

Among the 150 invitees that attended the ceremony, were Mrs. Nalini Sigla, Ambassador of India to Lisbon and Mr. João da Câmara, Ambassador of Portugal to New Delhi and several other academic personalities.
