Portuguese School of Macau
Just over a year before the handover of Macao to the People’s Republic of China, the Fundação Oriente took a decisive step towards guaranteeing the continuity of Portuguese teaching in what had now become a Special Administrative Region. Resulting from a pooling of efforts by the Portuguese state, the Fundação Oriente and the Associação Promotora da Instrução dos Macaenses – the Association of Educational Promotion of Macau, the Portuguese School of Macao has since set a standard for institutional teaching excellence.
In preceding years, the foundation had already been involved in joining the Instituto Camões in setting up the Portuguese Orient Institute with the core objective of preserving and promoting Portuguese language and culture in Asia. The Institute is housed at the former Saint Raphael Hospital, which was recovered at the Foundation’s expense.
