THE ART OF TILES IN GOA
Through to the end of April, the Kala Academy of Pangim, of the School of Arts, the Government of Goa, is hosting the exhibition The Art of Tiles, jointly organised by the General Consulate of Portugal in Goa, the Kala Academy, the Camões Institute and the Fundação Oriente. The exhibition was inaugurated by the Portuguese consul, Paulo Neves Pocinho, and by the President of the Kala Academy, Pratapsingh Rane.
The exhibition, made up of panels of photographs and some replica tile exhibits, details the history of the art of tile making in Portugal. It has been received with plenty of expectation in Goa, a land where the tile has historically not had any great relevance or prominence – contrary to the case of Brazil, another former Portuguese colony – where there is now a huge boom in tiles across the country: in public art (street and thoroughfare decorations, gardens and fountains), in homes and hotels as well as state properties.
The exhibition is accompanied by a series of conferences given by Portuguese and Indian specialists and a tile workshop for children, given by a Portuguese technical expert.
